Recycling centre plan for old colliery site

UP TO 45 new jobs could be created at the site of a former colliery near Selby after plans for a tyre recycling centre were given the go-ahead.

The proposals to convert the Gascoigne Wood Mine, in Lennerton Lane, Sherburn-in-Elmet, were submitted to Selby District Council in June by Newgen Recycling Ltd.

The site, which closed in August 2004, contains two large buildings, which will be used as a dropping-off point for scrap tyres and other rubber products, which would be stored and sorted at the facility before being shredded and granulated.

Since the colliery closed, the buildings have been used for electricity generation by British Gypsum, and were touted as potential locations for an environmentally friendly eco-town, or a new base for technology giants Hitachi.

In documents submitted to the council, agents acting for Newgen said the scheme would not harm the surrounding countryside or wildlife and no piles of tyres would be more than three metres tall, and so they will be hidden from view outside the site.

Riding the Cain train: Washington D.C. pizza joint offering ’9-9-9 Pizza’ deal

At least one pizza joint is trying to take advantage of the hype surrounding Republican presidential candidate and former pizza magnate Herman Cain’s “9-9-9” tax reform plan.

A Washington D.C. franchise of “Z Pizza” sent a promotional email out to customers Friday afternoon touting their new special: “The 9-9-9 Pizza, offering a large cheese pizza for only $9.99.

Cain’s plan throws out the current tax system by establishing a 9 percent corporate tax, a 9 percent income tax and a new 9 percent national sales tax.

The deal is being offered at the Z-Pizza in Chinatown in Washington until Oct. 19. DeCarlo said another location in Silver Spring, Md. will roll out the special Monday.

This isn’t the first time the D.C. pizza joint has gone political

Andy Rooney exiting ’60 Minutes’ this Sunday

NEW YORK With 1,096 essays for “60 Minutes” under his belt, Andy Rooney will deliver his 1,097th on Sundays broadcast. And it will be his last as a regular contributor.

The 92-year-old Rooney will announce his departure at the end of the program, where he has been featured since 1978, CBS News announced on Tuesday. It will be preceded by a segment in which Rooney looks back on his career with “60 Minutes” correspondent Morley Safer.

“Theres nobody like Andy and there never will be,” said Jeff Fager, chairman of CBS News and “60 Minutes” executive producer.

He called Rooneys contributions to the program “immeasurable,” and added, “Its harder for him to do it every week, but he will always have the ability to speak his mind on 60 Minutes when the urge hits him.”

Rooney began speaking his mind on “60 Minutes” in July 1978 with an essay about misleading reporting of automobile fatalities on the Independence Day weekend.

“Car for car,” argued Rooney, “its one of the safest weekends of the year to be going someplace.” In fact, fewer people die of all causes on that weekend than at most other times, his research told him.
